Aberdeenshire's hidden gem

Local activities

Whether it's outdoor activities or inside there is bound to be something to amuse you within a few miles of the town.

There is no shortage of things to do in Huntly and the surrounding area. For those interested in outdoor activities the town is ideally suited, with plenty of walking in local forests where you can also cycle or horse ride. The rivers Deveron, Isla and Bogie provide excellent fishing or there are local lochs.

Outdoor activities

Walking
Sign-posted trails in the Bin Forest are maintained by Forest Enterprise. Leaflets are available from the Forestry Office for the Bin and other local forests. There are also many footpaths in the area which can be found on Ordnance Survey maps. One path near Rhynie to the south climbs Tap O' Noth to the Iron Age fort and affords particularly fine views of the surrounding countryside. A footpath also runs to the summit of Ben Rinnes near Dufftown.

Fishing
The rivers Deveron, Isla and Bogie are renowned for the quality of their salmon and trout fishing. Many beats can be booked for day fishing or longer. More information can be found on the website of the River Deveron Salmon Fisheries Board. Also in the area, loch fishing is available at Artloch and Mossat Fisheries.
Riding
Ride in Clashindarroch Forest - Day rides and lessons are available at Corrylair Riding Centre just off the A97 to the south of the town. For long distance rides, try Highland Horseback's 200 mile trail from Huntly to the West Coast (experienced riders only).
Cycling
Many of the forest roads in the Bin and Gartly Moor can be used for off-road cycling with graded routes to suit all abilities. Further away, but easily accessible, are the graded routes in Whiteash and Ben Aigan near Fochabers and Kirkhill near Aberdeen. For experienced XC riders there are many off-road tracks which cross some of the more remote hills.
Skiing
The Nordic Ski Centre in Huntly, and in the Clashindarroch Forest, provides training courses in cross-country skiing and maintains a number of routes in the forest. The Lecht Ski Centre is also readily accessible from the town, providing downhill ski and snowboard runs of varying grades.
